Communication Strategy.

Kara LaFleur received her BFA in Photography with a minor in Bookmaking from the University of the Arts, where she focused on alternative image making processes. After graduation, her involvement with the Center for Emerging Visual Artists provided experience in the Non-Profit and Arts and Culture Sectors, primarily in administrative and development roles. Kara further developed her interest in community organizing and youth outreach as the Director of Summer Programming at Work to Ride, a non-profit prevention program providing disadvantaged youth with activities surrounding horsemanship, equine sports and education. She continues to Volunteer with this unique program and work on a long term photographic project entitled Work To Ride: (a work in progress), for which she received a Leeway Art and Change grant in 2008.
Kara joined the creative and tech communities through her work at Night Kitchen Interactive, coordinating marketing communications, strategies, and events while applying her passion for community engagement and grassroots marketing to help promote client projects and facilitate visitor participation through a variety of social media tools. Skills which she continued to develop at Canary Promotion working on publicity, marketing, community engagement & communications for arts, culture, entertainment & mission-driven clients. As the VP of Cheerful Communications at Slash7, Kara passionately promoted the idea of Cheerful Software that makes the world a better place to work and live.
Kara believes strongly in the power and strength of communities coming together for the greater good. She co-founded Geeks Who Give on the premise of open source community giving, mobilizing the Philadelphia tech scene and channeling their powerful and positive energy towards socially-conscious causes. She continues to learn and grow through ongoing collaborations focused on community generated change. Kara has a tendency to Laugh Out Loud and enjoys knitting, changing the world, local sustainable business practices, food, yoga, adventure, Philly, geeks, helping others, a well made Old Fashioned, and glitter; …so much glitter.
