Just 4 things…

Whenever I get overwhelmed at this whole process of following my dreams of working in the mental health field, I remind myself of this tweet. It usually puts a smile on my face and gives me the moment of clarity to focus on the big picture, and re-prioritize what I need to do on any given day, especially the days where I feel unmotivated or lost in the morass of daily struggles associated with school, work, life and family to work towards my goals of becoming a mental health practitioner:

I call these “Just 4 things days.” My constant 4 things currently include

  1. Get into Grad School.
  2. Survive Grad School.
  3. Become a Counseling Therapist.
  4. Feel financially secure and professionally fulfilled (and maybe get a dog).

As a chronic procrastinator, the work can really pile up and feel like I’m spinning my wheels and getting nowhere fast. When I frame these things in my mind, I try to pick at least one thing that serves my goals to accomplish on any given day. Sometimes, I get 10+ things done and feel super accomplished. Somedays are harder, and I find that taking a meditation break on that day provides me with the self care and compassion that my four things absolutely require.

By committing to doing something every day (and going so far as checking it off on a physical to do list) I’m keeping a promise to both my past and future while staying true to myself in the process. And that honestly, feels pretty great. It keeps me from pushing peas around on my plate, hemming and hawing over getting an email worded just right, or a document formatted  within an inch of its life. Breath in… Breathe out… and let that shit GO.

So some days, I need to just take a deep breath and remind myself that all big things in life can be boiled down to “Just 4 Things,” and have a little laugh while I’m at it.
